Testimonial

I am pleased to provide a reference for Mr Michael Hughes who taught here at City of London School over three academic years. He taught English Literature and Language to pupils aged from 11 to 18, including preparing some of the most able boys for Oxbridge entry. Michael was a popular and hard working teacher during his time with us and continues to be remembered with fondness and gratitude for his service.

Michael Hughes was an excellent tutor for my daughter's English Language and English Literature IGCSEs. He really understood how best to teach her. English Language and Literature do not come naturally to her as she has a more mathematical and scientific brain. He taught her some very good exam techniques in all aspects of the papers. He was very calm, friendly and positive and boosted my daughter's confidence immensely. He was also very reliable. I would highly recommend him.

Subject:

English Language and English Literature

Outcome:

We do not have her IGCSE results yet, but her predicted grades increased by two grades over the year that Michael tutored her.

Inspiring English Tutor

Calm and patient with an infectious enthusiasm for English, Michael supported our daughter during the 11+ process. He taught her how to develop ideas and use planning tools for essay writing, taking her fear away when faced with a blank page. Michael ignited her interest in creative writing and provided strategies to break down the comprehension process. Throughout each exercise, he gently underlined the fundamental rules of grammar, spelling and syntax without losing the sense of fun.

Michael is reliable, friendly and hard working and we would not hesitate to recommend him as a tutor.

Subject: English

Outcome: 11+ success

From Nigel K

just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that ***** got into ********* University (his first choice) but not only that, he managed to get AAB as his results. His teachers predicted him ABB as he got 4 x Cs at AS level. We are thrilled and very proud of him.

Your support was invaluable and you will be pleased to hear that one of the As was in English Literature - in fact he got an A in each of his English exams. So thank you again!

Michael created The Alive Poets Society

Alive Poets

You may believe that verse is hard, dense,

abstruse, opaque, deliberately obfuscatory,

with arcane words and esoteric reference

preferred to plain and everyday vocabulary;

despair that lyric poets' preoccupations

are with a hermeneutic of the self,

their raison d'êtres mere solipsistic passions,

not reading the world on your behalf.

But everything we say and all we write

might be poetic; by chance or by design

we play with words. That's why I built a site

for any student moved to muse online.

Expound, discuss, declare, betray, confess.

alivepoets.com is the address.
